In the  spring of 1999, a small group of dedicated Catholic laymen  saw the need for a  Catholic elementary  school that would eventually  grow into a Catholic high school  in the Houston northwest metropolitan area. They sought the assistance from the Legionaries of Christ, an order of priests founded in Mexico.  After securing their support, the group established  the first of two 501(c)3 non-profit coporations, the Northwoods Educational foundation, Inc., to begin the process of establishing a new school in accordance with  the philosophy and methodology of the Legionaries.

Fifty-one acres of land along FM 2920 was then purchased by the foundation, along with the purchase of a temporary building in the Ponderosa Forest subdivision, just off FM 1960 near Kuykendahl. Our first principal was hired and four additional staff members came on board over the course of the summer. Mrs. Susan Horne, our current principal, served as Academic Coordinator and first grade teacher during the first two years of operation. The founders met with Bishop Joseph Fiorenza on July 9, 1999 and received his permission to go forward.

A complete renovation of the building began immediately. Playground equipment was installed and fencing erected in preparation for the new school year, which opened on September 7, 1999, serving thirteen students in  PK4, kindergarten, first and second grades.

Ground was broken on the morning of September 16, 2001 for the first building at the permanant campus at FM 2920 at Gosling Road. Construction proceeded through the entire school year and during the summer of 2002. Classes opened in the new building on September 9, 2002 for grades PK3 through sixth. A beautiful dedication Mass, celebrated by Bishop Fiorenza, and attended by over 500 guests was held on October 12, 2002.

This year will see our fourth class of eighth grade graduates. As we look ahead to a very bright future, Northwoods Catholic School is fulfilling its mission of forming Christian leaders who will transform society.
